The dunes of the Namib desert owe their distinctive red hue to high concentrations of iron oxide, swept downstream from the Kalahari over millions of years. The heavier iron-rich deposits settle lower on the dunes as the winds lift lighter sands over the surface of the constantly shifting landscape.
